Healthy Foods Program

Barrier-free access to nutrition and food literacy remains a top priority for LTCES. Our school serves approximately 400 middle school students who come from three of the four most vulnerable elementary schools in the Comox Valley. LTCES is in the unique position of being able to support healthy food programs for youth during the school day and after school.

Weekly Salad Bar

One of our key programs, and a weekly highlight for Lake Trail students, is our salad bar.

Over the 2021 to 2022 school year, LTCES served over 5000 free lunches through our salad bar!

This program is coordinated by LTCES staff and delivered by a core group of dedicated volunteers. Every salad bar includes a basic green mix with a range of seasonal vegetables, a side salad, a grain, and protein. While many schools charge a nominal fee to cover expenses, Lake Trail’s salad bar remains free of charge.

LTCES is always looking for volunteers to support the salad bar program.

Program Snacks

As a part of our mandate, LTCES offers free or low barrier programs for youth and families in West Courtenay. Healthy snacks are offered to support young people in gaining extra nutrition as well as staying alert and energetic during programs. We anticipate requiring 1000 free after school and family program snacks over the 2022/23 year.

Cooking Programs

Another key piece of our food literacy support are cooking programs for students and the broader community. These support the skills and confidence to prepare healthy, tasty, affordable meals.

Garden to Plate

Food grown in the Lake Trail Community School Garden is incorporated into our salad bar and school foods programs. Throughout the summer months, volunteers share in the harvest and we deliver to community partner organizations.

Exciting food literacy, food security, and education momentum lays ahead with the build of the new Lake Trail Community School Garden and Outdoor Hub, and the evolution of our Healthy Foods Program.
